Senior Project

Senior Seminar
This year for our SLC in Senior Seminar I would like to talk about my senior project. For my project this year, my task was to talk with the DOT about allowing the Kihei charter to adopt 2 miles of any portion of highway on the island. Unfortunately, the DOT said it would be a difficult task to complete because of student safety, they believe that even with permission slips and waivers signed, that having kids pick up trash on the side of the road is still implausible. So while i figure that out, i have also been working on going around the island and picking up as much trash as i can and posting it to my instagram. I believe that this project uses a plethora of 21st century skills, such as intrapersonal skills, as I've had to communicate with the DOT and try to troubleshoot the idea. It also worked on my critical thinking skills as I had to not only come up with a project but come up with a way to still have a useful project while trying to figure out a way to have the students help adopt a highway. Another skill I believe this project uses is My self directional skills. When I need to go pick up trash or email the DOT, it's easy to want to do something else but using self directional skills I can allow myself to focus. And the final skill my senior project uses would be media literacy, from researching about the effects of trash on our community to being able to effectively talk with the DOT, my project uses a lot of media literacy. I really hope to make our island a better place with my senior project. I am saddened that no matter what happens when you go outside the only constant is the roundabout still being made and trash to be everywhere. I know it's not a lot but I enjoy doing what I can to help.
